Think about your greatest fear. Got it?
What are you feeling right now?
Chances are, you’re experiencing some anxiety or a general sense of discomfort. You may feel like there’s a knot in your stomach or suddenly like a dark cloud has moved over your head.
Dissociation is an NLP technique that aims to help you overcome this as you objectively view the situation.
Here’s what to do.
- Begin by identifying the emotion you are experiencing and want to remove from your life. Until you fully identify this, you will not be able to dismiss it.
- Take a step back. Pretend you are an outside viewer and imagine seeing yourself as you encounter the situation causing this emotion. Watch the event unfold before you, start to finish.
- Now you are to play that mental move only backward. Repeat it through once more.
- Next, do the same but this time, mentally add some fun music to the movie. As you do this, you should feel the negative feeling lessen. Keep replaying the movie until the feeling is no longer present.
While you may not cure a situation that causes you anxiety, fear, or feelings of discomfort with just one round of this technique, if you continue to do it, over time, you should be able to overcome the issue.
Reframing The Scenario
Next, we have reframing.
Let’s say you’ve just encountered an experience that was far from what you were hoping for.
Perhaps you broke up with your significant other, lost your job, or you saw a stock you were heavily invested in crash.
No matter the situation, chances are you are thinking very negatively right now, feeling hopeless and like you cannot control the situation.
Keep on this thought train and the likelihood you just make the situation worse is incredibly high. Most people do not make sound decisions when in this psychological state.
Your mission here is to reframe the situation. Basically, view it in another light.
Let’s say you lost your job.
Sure, you can focus on all the negatives. You’re out your pay, you’ll no longer work with your co-workers, you’ll now have to go out and search for a new job, and on it goes.
Instead, let’s focus on the positives.
You may be able to find a position that’s a better fit for you. Perhaps you’ll find a place of work closer to home. Or maybe, you’ll even find a position that pays better.
Instead of viewing this as a negative event, view it as a new door of opportunity. Reframe that event and start focusing on the positive elements it has to offer.
The more often you do this, the easier it will be for you to start looking at the positive side of every situation. This will totally change your frame of mind and how you react to the issue at hand.
Anchoring in NLP training is the act of attaching a sensory trigger of sorts to a certain state. Ever seen someone put an elastic band around their wrist to snap whenever they had a certain thought or did an action they no longer wanted in their life?
That’s a form of anchoring.
To use this NLP technique to help ease stress and anxiety, here’s what you’ll want to do.
- Begin by thinking of a very happy moment in your life. This could be anything from when you got married to when you first felt you were truly successful.
- Continue picturing that moment and begin describing it. As you do, wrap your fingers around your other wrist and give two squeezes. On that second squeeze, imagine the feeling of happiness intensifies.
- Continue doing this, each time you hit that double squeeze, feeling the happiness grow.
- Now next time you are faced with a stressful event or feelings of anxiety, wrap your hands around your wrist and squeeze twice. You should begin to feel some feeling of relief taking place.
Anchoring is going to be most successful the more often the sensory signal is associated with the mental memory/thought associated with it.
So the more often you can repeat the squeezing the thinking of that happy memory to really connect the anchor to the thought, the better off you’ll be.
This technique is also a great one for using in your communication as it can be a way of reminding you to ‘cool down’ when moments get heated and take a deep breath to ease your emotions.
Another way to use NLP is through the use of building rapport. This will help you with your interpersonal relationships and can also help you become more influential as a leader.
What this entails is mimicking the person that you are interacting with so that you can create a sense of deeper connection between you two.
There are a couple ways that you can go about mimicking the individual. They include:
- Mirroring their body language – if they stand with their feet open and turned out, for instance, you should slowly transition into a similar stance (don’t make this too obvious of course!)
- Using words that tend to be similar. This will also demonstrate that you are actively listening to what they are saying, making them feel more heard
Using either of these two techniques can help you improve your connection, gain trust, and become more well-liked by people you meet.
Reworking Your Beliefs
One limiting factor for many people is the beliefs they hold.
Right now, think about some negative beliefs you have. This could be a belief related to your own skills or capabilities, a belief related to the environment/world in which you live, or a belief related to others.
Chances are, whatever belief you are thinking about, it’s holding you back from seeing the success that you want to have.
Perhaps your belief is that you aren’t confident enough to speak in front of others. You always bow down from any sort of presentation, despite the fact that you know this could move you ahead in your career.
Likely, this belief that you are a poor public speaker has been brought on because you are continually focusing on that and seeking reassurance of that belief.
You may have had a situation in the past where you were up speaking in public and it didn’t go so well.
From that day forward, you feared public speaking. Because of this fear, you became uptight any time you had to say something in front of others.
As a result, each following event strengthened your belief that you were not good at public speaking. You basically brought it on yourself.
To help rework this belief, you need to look for signs of the contrary.
Really think hard about other times in your life that you may have spoken in front of others and were successful. Focus on those times.
The more of these incidents you can think of, the better.
Your goal here is to point out to yourself that your negative limiting beliefs are not entirely valid until you are able to reshape them.
You might also look at those negative instances and really check to see if they are that negative. Often, it’s all in our heads.
Because we go in thinking it will be bad, we come out expecting this outcome and focus on any little thing that will strengthen that belief.
When you stop and reassess the situation, you may come to find that it really wasn’t nearly as negative as you thought.
The more you can focus on this, the weaker that negative association will become in your mind until you have successfully completed a belief reframe.
Reworking your beliefs can take some time and effort, but in the long-term, it can really pay off and produce a high level of self-growth.
